Mother Teresa, one of the most highly respected women in the world, was born as Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu on August 26, 1910, at Skopje, Macedonia, in an Albania family.
After becoming a nun of the Roman Catholic Church, her name was changed to Mother Teresa.
The Order organized schools and opened centres to treat the blind, the aged, the lepers, the disabled and the dying.
She also founded many other organizations to serve the suffering humanity like ‘Nirmal Hridoy’, home for the sick and dying and ‘Shishu Bhavan’ for disabled and mentally retarded children.
For her selfless service to the poor and the destitute, Mother Teresa was bestowed with several awards. In 1962, she received her first award, ‘The Padmashree Award’.
She received the order of Merit in 1983 and the Rajiv Gandhi Sadbhawana Award in 1993. In 1980 she was awarded India’s highest decoration the ‘Bharat Ratna’.
