He was a popular student in College, While doing his M.A. he met Gandhiji who had come to visit the Aligarh Muslim University as a part of the non-co-operation movement campaign.
After the partition in 1947, Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad requested Zakir Husain to take up the Vice-Chancellorship of the Aligarh Muslim University, a position that he continued to hold for eight years till 1956, serving on the University Education Commission and subsequently the Press Commission.
The Government of India awarded him the ‘Padma Vibhusan’ in 1954 for his excellent works in the field of education.
In 1956, Dr. Zakir Husain was elected to the Rajya Sabha and later became the Governor of Bihar. In 1962 he was elected to the office of Vice-President of India.
In 1963 Dr. Zakir Husain was awarded the highest honour of the country the “Bharat Ratna” for his great service to the nation.
Dr. Zakir Husain showed keen interest in literary and academic work. He translated Plato’s “Republic” and Cannnon’s “Elementary Political Economical” into Urdu.
